Back-to-Back Group Stand-Up
In pairs, sitting back to back with elbows linked, students must stand up without using their hands; then more people join until large groups can do it. Students practice leg strength, coordination, and reaching agreement as a group.
How to play
- In pairs of similar height, students sit on the floor back to back, knees bent and elbows linked.
- On a count of three, they push against each other's backs and stand up together without letting go or using hands (3 min, several tries).
- Two pairs join to make groups of 4, sitting in a circle facing out with elbows linked, and repeat the challenge (3 min).
- Move up to groups of 6 or 8. Before each try, the group decides who counts and where to place their feet (4 min).
- Final 2-minute challenge: the whole class tries to stand up in two big circles.
Rules
- Don't suddenly let go of a partner's arm, or they may fall.
- Push with your back and legs; no pulling on necks or clothes.
- Always choose one person to count out loud.
- If anyone says something hurts, the group stops right away.
Variations
Easier
Allow one hand on the floor while standing up.
Standard
Stand up with no hands, first in pairs and then in groups of 4 to 8.
Harder
Once standing, the group sits back down and stands up again without letting go.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student calls the count and watches which groups place their feet best, then shares tips.
- Shyness: always start with a partner the student trusts.
- Fitness level: pair students with less strength with someone their size, not the strongest student.
Learning goals
- Use leg strength in sync with others.
- Agree on a plan before acting.
- Stay connected with classmates safely.
Teacher tip
The trick is pulling feet in close and pushing at the same time; let students figure it out after the first fail. Use a clean floor, or thin mats if the floor is hard.
