Around-the-Net Paddle Carousel
Two lines, one on each side of a low net, hit the ball with paddles and, after every hit, run to the line on the other side. Students practice hitting on the move, staying focused and keeping a group rally rhythm going.
How to play
- Set up 3 low nets (or ropes at about 30 in) with a 10 x 16 ft court on each side. Groups of 8: four lined up behind each side, each with a paddle (3 min).
- The first player in one line serves gently off a bounce; the first player in the other line returns it off a bounce.
- After hitting, each player runs clockwise around the outside of the cones to the end of the opposite line.
- Cooperative mode (4 min): the group counts hits in a row and tries to beat its record in three tries.
- Competitive mode (6 min): a miss costs a life; after two lives lost, the player stays in the rotation as ball retriever for one lap, then rejoins. Clean up (2 min).
Rules
- One bounce before each hit, and always run around the outside of the cones.
- Hit soft and high: no smashes.
- Safety: the line waits behind the cone, and nobody steps in until the last hitter has left.
Variations
Easier
Allow two bounces and no running: switch lines at a fast walk.
Standard
One bounce, run to the other line, and chase a group record.
Harder
Use a backhand on even laps, or return the ball on the volley.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student stays on one side and hits whenever their turn comes up while others rotate.
- Hearing impairment: the hitter raises the paddle after hitting to show they're done.
- Fitness level: two shorter courts so the run is shorter.
Learning goals
- Hit with a paddle after moving quickly.
- Stay focused to step in on time for your turn.
- Work with the group to set a shared record.
Equipment for a class of 25

- low net: 3

Teacher tip
In table tennis this is called "around the table"; here it's played on the ground with paddles. Mark the running direction clearly with cones or there will be collisions on the first lap.
