Animals Behind the Sheet
With the room dimmed and a light behind a hanging sheet, small groups make shadow-puppet animals with their whole bodies while the rest of the class guesses and then imitates the animal. It works on body expression, imitation and taking turns.
How to play
- Hang the sheet on a rope with clothespins, put the spotlight behind it and lower the blinds halfway; the teacher walks behind and everyone sees the shadow (2 min).
- The teacher makes an animal with their body (an elephant with an arm for a trunk) and the children guess (2 min).
- In groups of three, children go behind the sheet and act out an animal they secretly chose with the teacher: walking, hopping or crawling like it (5 min).
- Each time the audience guesses, everyone gets up and moves around the room like that animal (4 min).
- To finish, the whole class walks in a line behind the sheet as their favorite animal and comes out the other side (2 min).
Rules
- Only the performing group goes behind the sheet.
- The audience guesses with a raised hand.
- Nobody touches the spotlight: it’s the teacher’s.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher whispers the animal to the group and helps with a gesture; stick to familiar animals (dog, cat, bird).
Standard
For 4-year-olds, the group picks one of three animal cards and prepares on their own.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the group builds one animal together (a giraffe with one child as the neck and another as the legs).
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: they make the animal with arms and head; the wheelchair goes behind the sheet like everyone else.
- Autism or fear of the dark: they can be the teacher’s helper by the spotlight, where it’s brighter.
- Visual impairment: they sit in the front row and a buddy describes the animal; then they move with everyone.
Learning goals
- Act out animals with the whole body.
- Observe and interpret a silhouette.
- Take turns performing and watching.
Equipment for a class of 25
- White sheet: 1
- LED spotlight: 1
- Rope: 1
- Clothespins: 6
Teacher tip
Use an LED spotlight, which doesn’t get hot, and tape the cord along the wall. Place the light about six feet from the sheet and have performers stay close to the fabric: the closer they are, the sharper the shadow.
