Agility Ladder Circuit
Small groups rotate through agility ladders laid on the blacktop, practicing footwork patterns from one foot per square to lateral and in-out steps. It develops quick feet, rhythm, coordination and agility.
How to play
- Lay out 5 ladders with a starting cone at one end and split the class into 5 groups of 5, one group per ladder (1 min).
- Demonstrate pattern 1: one foot in each square, running lightly on the balls of the feet; each student does 3 passes and walks back along the side (3 min).
- Pattern 2: two feet in each square (right-left in, then move on) for 3 passes (2 min).
- Pattern 3: lateral steps, facing sideways and stepping both feet into each square, leading with each side (3 min).
- Pattern 4: in-out, feet in the square then out wide on both sides, and so on down the ladder (3 min).
- Challenge: each student picks their favorite pattern and does 2 timed passes while a groupmate counts the seconds aloud; try to beat your first time without touching the rungs (3 min).
Rules
- Start only when the person ahead has left the ladder.
- Return by walking along the outside of the ladder, never through it.
- If you touch a rung, keep going and fix your feet on the next square—no stopping suddenly.
- Wear tied shoes and land softly on the balls of your feet.
Variations
Easier
Students walk each pattern slowly and can say the steps out loud ("in-in, out-out").
Standard
Students do four patterns at a steady pace with 3 passes each, then the timed challenge.
Harder
Students add arm movements, do the patterns backward, or react to a called pattern change halfway down the ladder.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student walks or wheels beside the ladder tapping squares with hands or a stick, following the same rhythm.
- Hearing impairment or difficulty following instructions: post a picture card of each pattern at the start of every ladder.
- Lower fitness or knee problems: walk the patterns and rest one pass out of three.
Learning goals
- Improve foot speed and agility through set footwork patterns.
- Develop rhythm and coordination between both sides of the body.
- Measure and improve personal performance with timed passes.
Equipment for a class of 25
- agility ladders: 5
- cones: 5
Teacher tip
Speed comes last: correct the footwork first and only time passes once students can do the pattern cleanly. Chalk ladders on the blacktop work fine if you don't have enough rope ladders.

Accuracy Circuit with Cloth Targets
Accuracy stations with cloth targets on the floor and on the wall, where students toss bean bags and score points by ring. They work on throwing accuracy and matching force to distance.
Adapted Beach Handball
An adapted beach handball game with a soft ball: no dribbling, three steps with the ball, and double points for spectacular goals such as jump or spin shots. It develops throwing, passing and team play in a fun, safe way.
Adapted Volleyball
A simplified volleyball game with a soft foam ball where students may catch and toss the ball before learning to hit it, keeping rallies going over the net. It develops striking, teamwork, and court positioning without the fear of a hard ball.
Aerobics Stations
Students rotate through five aerobics stations to upbeat music, doing step-ups, jumping jacks, high knees, skipping and dance moves. The activity builds cardiovascular endurance and coordination at each student's own intensity.
Animal Kingdom Circuit
Each station represents an animal, and students move like it: frog jumps, bear walks, crab walks and kangaroo hops. The circuit works the whole body, builds strength and coordination, and encourages creativity.
Badminton Intro
An introduction to badminton where students learn the grip, the underhand serve, and the basic clear, then play short cooperative and competitive rallies over a net. It develops eye-hand coordination, racket control, and footwork.
