Adapted Gaelic Football
A school version of Irish Gaelic football that blends hands and feet: players may run with the ball, hand-pass it with a fist, and kick for goal. Students build hand-eye and foot-eye coordination, varied passing, and an appreciation of a traditional sport from another culture.
How to play
- Spend 3 minutes on the game's Irish roots, and set up a 100 x 65 ft field with a goal at each end and two tall cones 6 ft outside each post.
- In pairs, practice the hand pass (punching the ball off the other open palm) and the bounce-and-catch for 4 minutes.
- Form teams of 6 in pinnies; a player may take four steps with the ball, then must bounce it or pass, and passes are made with a fist or a kick.
- A kicked goal into the net is worth 3 points; a kick between a post and its cone is worth 1 point. No goals by fist or throw.
- Play two 6-minute games against different opponents, with a goalie who rotates each game (12 min).
- Finish with a final 6-minute game in which each team must score at least once with each type of point.
Rules
- Four steps max with the ball before bouncing it.
- No throwing: only fist hand passes or kicks.
- No grabbing or pushing; steal only by slapping the ball or intercepting.
- Safety: a loose ball on the ground is lifted with the foot, not picked up by hand, to avoid head collisions.
Variations
Easier
Allow six steps and two-handed throws.
Standard
Four steps, fist or foot passes, and two ways to score.
Harder
Players may only keep moving with a toe-tap (drop the ball onto the foot and catch it).
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: allow picking the ball up by hand and shooting from a fixed zone.
- Visual impairment: use a bright ball and a guide partner who calls out passes.
- Skill level: give extra time practicing the hand pass with a foam ball before the game.
Learning goals
- Combine hand and foot skills in the same game.
- Choose the type of pass and score based on the situation.
- Learn about and value a traditional sport from another culture.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyball: 4
- goals: 4
- cones: 20
- pinnies: 24
Teacher tip
The hand pass is tricky at first; stress holding the ball on an open palm and striking with a closed fist. A short video of the sport is a big motivator.
