A Stick Maze for My Feet
In groups, children lay sticks on the ground to make a simple maze with a pine cone prize in the middle, then travel through it in different ways without stepping on the sticks. It builds spatial concepts (in, out, beside), planning, and balance.
How to play
- The teacher shows a small stick maze and everyone walks through it to the pine cone in the middle (2 min).
- In groups, build your own maze by laying sticks end to end as walls (4 min).
- Everyone walks their maze to the pine cone without stepping on the sticks, and back out (3 min).
- Visit another group's maze, tiptoeing or taking giant steps (3 min).
- Move one stick to open a new path and walk it backward (2 min).
- Pick up the sticks two at a time and stack them in the pile (1 min).
Rules
- I don't step on the sticks: they're walls.
- If I bump a wall, I back up a little and find another way.
- I wait for my friend to come out before going in.
- Sticks stay on the ground, not lifted up.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, a hallway with one bend made by the teacher; the main thing is not stepping on sticks.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, build the maze as a group with help and walk it.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, mazes with two paths, one a dead end, and kids explain to another group how to reach the center.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: make wider hallways for a wheelchair or walker; the child can also guide a buddy with words.
- Visual impairment: build walls from logs or thick ropes that can be felt with a foot, and walk holding hands.
- Autism: keep the group's maze the same every round so the child can anticipate.
Learning goals
- Understand spatial concepts along a path.
- Plan and build a play space.
- Control steps to stay inside the lines.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long sticks: 40
- large pine cones: 5
Teacher tip
Use straight, thick sticks that won't roll. Keep the hallways wide, at least one adult step; narrow ones lead to frustration.
